You can take part in the Scarecrow Trail and children can also join in the Festival Day.

4 easy steps to enter

  • Complete the registration form by Wednesday 7 September 2016:
    • Live outside the hinterland? – Let us know and we will partner you with a host property in the hinterland.
    • Want someone else to make your scarecrow? – Let us know if you live in the hinterland and we will partner you with a community group, school or artist to make you a scarecrow to display out the front of your property, for a small additional cost.
  • Pay entry fee:
    • $25 – family, individual, schools, artist, community groups, MPHTA members9500 prizes
    • $50 – business
    • Free entry for individual children and siblings on Festival Day.
    • $50 to host a scarecrow (locals in the hinterland who have their scarecrow made by a community group, school or artist).
  • Build a scarecrow to:
    • Display out the front on your/host hinterland property. Check our ideas page to help you get started with ideas and building your scarecrow.
  • Display your scarecrow

    • Festival Day – bring your scarecrow to Red Hill Recreation Reserve before 10:30am for judging livered on Friday.

    • Best School/Kindergarden Scarecrow’ – WIN free entry for your class and two teachers to the Enchanted Adventure Garden $375 PLUS WIN a weekend car-hire package from BMW Mornington for your school to fundraise valued at $1500 plus a host of consolidation prizes.

Artist Permanent SculptureRusty Scarecrow -Sustainability winner

Artists are invited to enter the inaugural Best Artist Sculpture Scarecrow competition with a permanent art installation, based on the ‘Aussie icons’ theme or you can opt for a more ‘Traditional scarecrow ‘sculpture or farmyard art.

  • Best Artist Sculpture Scarecrow’ – WIN $1500 first prize, $500 second prize – sponsored by Mornington Peninsula Shire Arts & Culture unit.
  • Great visibility – The winning sculpture will be displayed in a highly visible location in Red Hill for up to two years and be sign posted with the winning artist details and linked online to their business website.

Festival Day 1 October – for children

  • Best Children’s Scarecrow’ first prize two family passes to the Enchanted Adventure Garden value $96 plus certificates for all children
  • A range of children’s activities will be organised for children to take part in on the day and include ‘Children’s Scarecrow Artwork’ and a ‘Live Scarecrow Competition’.

Festival Trail Guidelines – for everyone including schools and businesses

  • Create an ‘Aussie icons’ or ‘traditional’ scarecrowIMG_1206
  • Scarecrow Lesson Plans for schools and kindergardens are available to help teachers
  • No hazardous or toxic materials please
  • Judges will look for attention to detail and originality – so come up with something unexpected!
  • Give your scarecrow a name, and write a 25 words description or tell us the inspiration for your scarecrow by 1 September 2016
  • Put your scarecrows up out the front of your hinterland property by Wednesday 14 September 2016. If you do not live in the region, the organisers will match you up with a local business/homeowner to host your scarecrow in the hinterland.
  • Judging will take place on Thursday 15 September 2016 and judge’s decision will be final.

Festival Trail Guidelines – for artists

The 2016 Artist’s Sculpture Competition is a forerunner for a planned permanent scarecrow sculpture trail for the hinterland region.Lavender Faerie Queen

  • Create a permanent sculpture that relates to the theme of ‘Aussie icons’ or a ‘traditional’ scarecrow
  • Must be made out of durable materials – metal, stone or wood – and suitable for an outdoor area
  • Must be able to be properly secured (e.g. chain) and weighted to cope with strong winds.
  • Must be suitable for a family audience and ‘people friendly’ regarding safety
  • No hazardous or toxic materials please

  • Must be easily transportable
  • Give your scarecrow a name, and write a 25 words description or tell us the inspiration for your scarecrow by 1 September 2016
  • Must be displayed in the hinterland region by Wednesday 14 September 2016. If you do not live in the region the organisers will match you up with a local business to host your art installation on their street frontage.
  • Judges will look for attention to detail and your originality – so come up with something unexpected!
  • Winning sculpture will be on loan to the Scarecrow Festival organisers for up to two years. It must have bolt holes so it can be secured to a concrete pad. It will also be sign-posted with your website or contact details.
  • Judging will take place on Thursday 15 September 2016 and judge’s decision will be final.

Guidelines for snapping a Selfie

  • Snap a selfie or create a short video (max 3 minutes) with one or as many scarecrows as you like on the between 16 Septemberfacebook2 and 29 September.
  • Upload your selfie picture to Hinterland Scarecrow Festival Facebook page and hastag #hinterlandscarecrow on or before 5pm Thursday 29 September 2016
  • The photos will automatically be fed onto our newsfeed on this website
  • The winners will be announced at Festival Day on 1 October 2016 at 1pm
  • Judges will look for the most creative inspired photo/video- so come up with something fun and unexpected!
  • All content must be appropriate and family friendly. The organizers reserve the right to refuse entries that are not appropriate.

Guidelines for People’s Choice Award

  • Vote for you favourite scarecrow to win the People’s Choice Awardpeoples-choice-button-6
  • The winner will be announced on the Scarecrow Festival Day, Saturday 1 October, 1pm at Red Hill Recreation Reserve, Red Hill, and posted on this page.

Guidelines for Children’s Festival Day

  • Build an ‘Aussie icons’ or ‘traditional’ scarecrow by yourself or with your brothers and sisters
  • Children are up to 12 years of age inclusive
  • Bring your scarecrow on 1 October 2016 to Red Hill Recreation Reserve (184 Arthurs Seat Road, Red Hill) before 10:30am for judging. They can be collected from the same location on Festival Day from 3pm.
  • Organisers will place your scarecrow on the Red Hill Recreational Reserve Oval on the Festival Day, or inside the pavilion in inclement weather, for everyone to admire.
  • Judging will take place on the day at 10am and the judge’s decision will be final.

Spot the Scarecrow IMG_1145

The Spot the Scarecrow is an activity for everyone to enjoy whilst on the Festival Trail. It is a bit like a scavenger hunt!. Don’t forget to email us your entry for your chance to go into the draw to WIN one of two weekend BMW weekend car hire packages worth $1500.

 

Judges Criteria

Scarecrows judges will include a team of sponsors, local artists and members of the Mornington Peninsula Scarecrow Committee. The criteria for judging will include:

  • Interpretation – how well does the scarecrow celebrate the theme! Score 1-5
  • Durability – how well the scarecrow is constructed. Score 1-5
  • Creativity. Score 1-5
  • Attention to detail and craftsmanship Score 1-5.
